The Rebound
Remember how I said Jamaican families expect their kids to be Doctors, Lawyers and Engineers, well the doctor route did not work out for me. Logically, the next step was to become a Lawyer. It was not without warrant though. In High School, I was ranked second in the state for Policy Debate which lead me to believe that I was supposed to be a lawyer. Sophomore year was filled with political science classes.
Feature 1
During my time within the PSIR department, I discovered a new side of myself. I was finally in a place where I could talk about political and social issues in a way that was constructive and beneficial. While I was a Political Science Major, Dr. Hawkins, my advisor, helped me explore a career that focused on justice and civil rights. These two topics are central motivators in my life and I was ready to become a civil rights lawyer or a campaign manager.
Feature 2
In my law courses, I was able to explore the intersections of faith and law that really challenged my faith in new ways. Even though I was being pushed in the right direction, I was also discovering my love for art and communication. Through my Intro to Art class, I was able to see the ways the art changed narratives in minority communities
fEATURE 3
Alongside of discovering art and its power in social justice, I saw the importance of public speaking and rhetoric in my COMM 101 course.
Art and Communication were two avenues that I felt extremely comfortable in and in many ways liberated. Political Science was a great major for me to explore some of the topics that deeply effected me but it had it's limitation in its form. For me, Law and political science did not allow for the emotional aspect of change that I love. My Gallups Strength's finder is Woo, Communication, Empathy, Ideation and Includer. These strengths alongside of my involvement in a startup company pushed me into the communication field.
